MedStar's Ransomware Confirmed, Costing $1M a Day
It has been officially confirmed that the attack on MedStar Health Systems was a ransomware attack. A ransom note typical of the MSIL/Samas strain we previously warned about has been published that is allegedly from the hackers. It demands 3 Bitcoins ($1,250) to unlock a single computer or 45 Bitcoins ($18,500) to unlock the whole system.
Unlike Presbyterian Hospital, which paid $17,000 in ransom to cybercriminals, so far MedStar has refused to pay, costing them possibly as much as one million dollars a day. According to a spokesperson, doctors now at least have read only access medical records thanks to three main clinical information systems being restored.
