US Postal Service Hacked

The United States Post Office admitted to a recent security breach. Compromised information included personal information, including Social Security numbers, for three-quarters of a million current and retired postal employees along with data of almost three million postal service customers.  The USPS issued the following statement:

"The Postal Service has recently learned of a cyber-security intrusion into some of our information systems," the statement said. "We began investigating this incident as soon as we learned of it, and we are cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing. The investigation is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and joined by other federal and postal investigatory agencies. The intrusion is limited in scope and all operations of the Postal Service are functioning normally."

The FBI announced that they are investigating the "nature and scope" of the incident.  Neither the FBI nor the USPS has said who is to blame for the security breach.

In addition to Social Security numbers, the personal information of employee data includes birthdays, addresses and payroll codes.  Compromised customer data includes names, phone numbers and home and email addresses.

The USPS is offering credit monitoring services to affected employees and retirees.  They have also turned off a virtual private network (VPN) used for telecommuting and plan to keep it down until a new, more secure version can be brought online.  There are also plans to update other systems and equipment as part of a security overhaul effort.
