11,000 Stolen W2 Forms
Just last week we wrote about a new method of identity theft, where a CEO's email address is spoofed to trick a company's employee into sending W2 information to hackers. While we've heard of instances where people caught onto the scam in time, some companies have already fallen victim.
The victims are around 11,000 employees of Pennsylvania Main Line Health. The attack happened on February 16, though the health care company was unaware of any issue until the FBI issued an alert about the scam.
Main Line Health's CEO, Jack Lynch, released a statement saying that the company is setting up resources to help inform and protect their employees, including credit monitoring services for all their employees. They are, furthermore, looking to strengthen their security and awareness to prevent it from happening again.
Of course, the best way to prevent such fraud from happening is to make sure you're up to speed on the latest in hacking, phishing and other such scams. How vulnerable is your company? To find out and to take steps to protect your customers and employees, contact us for a consultation immediately.
